Running a Home Assistant Operating System [HAOS] VM in VirtualBox

What is Home Assistant Operating System [HAOS]?

[Home Assistant Operating System is a] minimal Operating System optimized to power Home Assistant. It comes with Supervisor to manage Home Assistant Core and Add-on. -https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/
  1. Open a web browser and download the Home Assistant Operating System .vdi Download
  2. Extract the downloaded .zip file
  3. Launch VirtualBox
  4. Create a New VM by selecting Machine > New

    Name: HAOS
    Machine Folder: C:\VMs
    Type: Linux
    Version: Other Linux (64-bit)
    Memory Size: 2048 MB
    Hard disk: Use an existing virtual hard disk now

  5. Click the folder icon > Browse to and select the extracted HAOS .vdi file
  6. Click Create
  7. Select the VM and Click Settings
  8. Select System
  9. Check the Enable EFI checkbox
  10. On the Processor tab, give the VM at least 2 processors
  11. Select Display
  12. Slide the Video Memory to 128 MB
  13. Select Network
  14. Set the attached to dropdown to Bridged Adapter
  15. Select Audio
  16. Set the Audio Controller dropdown to Intel HD Audio
  17. Click OK
  18. Make sure the HAOS VM is selected and click Start > Normal
  19. Welcome to Home Assistant Operating System
  20. Open a web browser and navigate to http://DNSorIP:8123
  21. Enter a Name, Username and Password to create a Home Assistant user account > Click Create Account
  22. Enter a Name for this Home Assistant installation (ie Home)
  23. Click Detect to set the installation geolocation
  24. Verify the Unit System and Currency > Click Next
  25. Select any anonymous data to share with the Home Assistant development team > Click Next
  26. Click Finish
